Safety Tips To Adhere To When Loading A Skip Bin For The First Time

by Jessica Lowe

When planning to undertake a large-scale project that will produce a significant volume of waste materials, be it a renovation or landscaping project, it is advisable to hire skip bins for appropriate waste removal. However, loading a skip is not the same as throwing garbage into a trash can. Since these receptacles carry a heavy load, it is imperative to ensure you are placing the garbage correctly or you stand the chance of jeopardising both your safety as well as that of the environment and waste removalists. To prevent this from happening, below are safety tips that you should adhere to when loading a skip bin for the first time.

Balance the weight of the waste items

If you will be loading the skip with items that vary in weight, it is essential to ensure that the items are balanced inside the skip. A mistake some people make is simply throwing in the garbage willy-nilly and then waiting for the skip to be collected. However, if one side of the skip is heavier than the other, there is a chance of the skip tipping, which puts the driver at risk of an accident.

Furthermore, if you are not loading the skip with the intent of ensuring the weight is even, you are also at the threat of being injured if the skip collapses to its side. As a rule of thumb, place all the heavy items at the floor of the skip in an even manner. The weight of the heavy waste at the bottom will help in stabilising the skip.

Only include the specified waste

When you elect to hire a skip bin, you will be required to expound on the type of waste that you are going to put into the skip. Residential waste items that do not contain any hazardous compounds will be safe for the skip. But, if you do need to get rid of toxic waste substances, it is critical to inform the skip bin provider of this beforehand. When the skip bin provider is aware of hazardous compounds, they will ensure that the specialists will be armed with the right protective gear to keep them safe from contamination.

In the event that you do not furnish the provider with this information, do not attempt to place toxic materials into the bin. Firstly, doing so can lead to legal action since you will be inadvertently be putting the driver at risk. Secondly, including hazardous substances into the skip poses the risk of contaminating the environment if the skip is to topple over. Hence, never include items such as explosives, asbestos or car batteries unless you have specifically requested for the removal of these items.

I organise the rubbish so I can use some for composting, send some to the recycling centres and keep my rubbish bags relatively small. I also dabble with other ideas and strategies. If your rubbish smells, if there is too much of it or if you have any other questions or concerns about garbage removal, you have come to the right place.
